‘Focus on his running game’: Benji’s ideal halves partner for star Bulldogs recruit

Former NRL great Benji Marshall has shared his thoughts on who should take over the halfback role for the Bulldogs leading into the Round 1.

Marshall has challenged Barrett’s preferred pairing of Jake Averillo and Matt Burton, claiming Kyle Flanagan might suit their new recruits style of play.

“Obviously you can tell he (Trent Barrett) wants Averillo and Burton partnered in the halves,” Marshall said on Triple M’s The Rush Hour.

“After watching the game last night I just think that Burton’s one of those guys who wants to just focus on his running game.

“You don’t want to have to concentrate too much on having to control the team and do most of the kicking.

“If it was up to me I’d try and find a halfback who fits that mould, Flanagan probably fits that a bit more.

“I think Jake Averillo is a great player don’t get me wrong, great runner of the footy probably preferably a fullback, five-eighth, centre but that’s going to be a great worry going forward for the Bulldogs is who plays in the halves.”

Marshall later highlighted the pressure of playing halfback and the organisation that is needed for a team to performe, questioning whether Matt Burton can deliver on that front.

“As soon as you move into the halves and you have to change your role to organising your team, kicking game that change your mindset and I feel like for Burto the thing he needs the most is stability around him and not have to focus on that,” Marshall said.

One Bulldog that was in the headlines after a brain fade against Cronulla was Bulldogs prop Tevita Pangai Junior who narrowly escaped suspension after his involvement in a melee with Sharks prop Royce Hunt.

Averillo and Burton linked a couple of times ok but when Matt took a backseat for Averillo it was more of the same old..

This is an interesting perspective from Benji but the one kick we do want from Burton is his long kicks as he has a huge boot on him.

If Trent wants to prove himself he should play Kyle who was his prized recruit last year and get him back into form/ progressing forward.

I don't see any organisation in Kyle at all. It's NEVER been in his game because he's been alongside players in halves who are heavy game managers. Keary and Townsend.

I thought the major buying point of Burton WAS his organisation and steering sides around. We already had / have a stack of ball running halves.

Sad to say, but a fully fit Kieran Foran would have been the perfect match alongside Burton.

We need a Thurston/Keary/Moses type player

I reckon Trindall from the Sharks is looking pretty good, he's going to be battling for a top spot if Moylan can stay fit. Emphasis on "if".

Had a shaky start with a few shockers in the trial, and definitely has an error or two in him. I'm not completely sold on him, and think Sharks will go with Moylan and Hynes in the halves to begin with.

He's not a bad player, but more a fullback turned half. Interesting to see Storm put Meaney into the halves straight away in the trials.

Yeah true.. he's got some fair skills for halves though.. I wonder if the Dolphins are taking note.

How did he go? It will be interesting to see how he does in a quality team.

Meaney looked good from what I saw, though didn't pay much attention as I was in and out the entire day.
