Former NRL great Benji Marshall has shared his thoughts on who should take over the halfback role for the Bulldogs leading into the Round 1.
Marshall has challenged Barrett’s preferred pairing of Jake Averillo and Matt Burton, claiming Kyle Flanagan might suit their new recruits style of play.
“Obviously you can tell he (Trent Barrett) wants Averillo and Burton partnered in the halves,” Marshall said on Triple M’s The Rush Hour.
“After watching the game last night I just think that Burton’s one of those guys who wants to just focus on his running game.
“You don’t want to have to concentrate too much on having to control the team and do most of the kicking.
“If it was up to me I’d try and find a halfback who fits that mould, Flanagan probably fits that a bit more.
“I think Jake Averillo is a great player don’t get me wrong, great runner of the footy probably preferably a fullback, five-eighth, centre but that’s going to be a great worry going forward for the Bulldogs is who plays in the halves.”

Marshall later highlighted the pressure of playing halfback and the organisation that is needed for a team to performe, questioning whether Matt Burton can deliver on that front.
“As soon as you move into the halves and you have to change your role to organising your team, kicking game that change your mindset and I feel like for Burto the thing he needs the most is stability around him and not have to focus on that,” Marshall said.
One Bulldog that was in the headlines after a brain fade against Cronulla was Bulldogs prop Tevita Pangai Junior who narrowly escaped suspension after his involvement in a melee with Sharks prop Royce Hunt.
