Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs' Josh Addo-Carr and Matt Burton have been named in coach Mal Meninga's Australian Kangaroos squad to tackle the 2021 Rugby League World Cup held in England from 15 October 2022 to 19 November 2022.
The season caps off a stellar year for Bulldogs' five-eighth Matt Burton, who after debuting for the NSW Blues in the 2022 State of Origin series, will join twelve other debutants to pull on the green and gold in the end-of-season international tournament.
Canterbury-Bankstown winger Josh Addo-Carr will cherish his time in Australian colours after a successful stint with the Prime Minister's XIII against Papua New Guinea a week ago.
The Australian Kangaroos will face Fiji on October 15 at Headingley Stadium, Leeds in their World Cup opener. Then facing Scotland on Friday October 21, followed by the final Pool B fixture against Italy on Saturday October 29 at Totally Wicked Stadium, St Helens.
“I congratulate all these players on the selection for their country,” ARLC Chairman Mr Peter V’landys AM said.
“They should be very proud as there is no greater honour than to put on the green and gold of Australia. The Kangaroos have not played since 2019 so it will be an important moment when these players step onto the field in the United Kingdom.
“The Commission is excited to see the return of international rugby league in a tournament, and are confident the Australian team will do us proud.”
Australian Kangaroos Coach Mal Meninga congratulated was excited for the players named for the 2021 Rugby League World Cup Campaign.
“We have an extremely healthy mix of incumbent players as well as a number of players who are yet to represent their country,” Meninga said.
“We will have players who have performed on this stage before. Many of these players have produced form when it counts in both State of Origin and also in the Finals Series.
“The balance of the squad is extremely strong and will hopefully produce the results we’re after over the duration of the tournament.”
