Bulldogs join forces with Reclaim The Game to say no to sports betting advertising

In a first of its kind, the Bulldogs have rejected sports betting advertising and joined Reclaim the Game, a NSW Government initiative that challenges the idea that betting is a normal part of sport.

The Bulldogs will join the South Sydney Rabbitohs and teams from four other codes in turning down sports betting sponsorships. Nine teams across cricket, the A-League, AFL and NBL are already making gambling awareness and education part of their game.

Director of the Office of Responsible Gambling, Natalie Wright, said more than any other sport, the NRL is saturated with sports betting advertising and cultural change is vital to prevent and reduce gambling harm in the community.

“Online sports betting is the fastest growing form of gambling and the NRL is the most popular sport to bet on in NSW,” Ms Wright said.

“The NRL fan-base is huge and gambling advertising is everywhere which means if you’re a supporter exposure it’s virtually inescapable.”

In 2019 the NRL had a TV audience of 101.9 million people and research shows that every week, almost half of 12–17-year-olds saw gambling advertising on television during sports and racing and a third could recall the different gambling options.

Young men are most at risk of gambling harm and an estimated 41 per cent of regular sports bettors experience one or more gambling-related problems.

“Sports betting companies know that visibility works, which is why they invest so much in advertising on the most popular code in NSW.

“We are so pleased to see the Bulldogs and Rabbitohs reclaim the game in the advertising spaces they control. They are leading the way in the NRL by calling time on sports betting sponsorships. We hope that other clubs and the NRL itself will follow suit, so that fans can get back to what sport is all about.”

Bulldogs Chief Executive, Aaron Warburton, was pleased to support the initiative: “The contest, the rivalries, the skill, and the personalities within our game drive millions of viewers across country to tune in. Rugby League is one of the most entertaining sporting experiences on offer.

At Bulldogs home matches, we are extremely proud to be reclaiming the game for our Members and Fans. We believe that you should be able to watch and enjoy our great game with your friends and families without the contestant advertising from sports betting companies.”

This is a good move, it's gotten out of control.

However what's been out of control for much longer is fast food advertising.. The club along with the NRL could set a huge example by ..well they'll never outright bar fast food companies but they should only be allowed to be very minor sponsors, like player sponsors or whatever. Alcohol companies also.

Souths? The same Souths that have a prominent Major sponsor of Crown Resorts? Oookay then.

Whilst I agree somewhat, the game does need "big game" sponsors, so I don't really mind fast food companies sponsoring (nor alcohol companies really), because it's all a personal choice.

However sports betting advertising needs to be banned outright (across ALL sports - like cigarette advertising is). Too many clubs have sports betting partners these days, and the only thing its done is degrade the NRL to a point people point fingers and scream "RIGGED" too often. To be honest sometimes it really is questionable with new rules as to if the games are being rigged/shaped.

I know what you mean but a product like the NRL will always find major sponsors.

My issue is that junk food is way too normalised today, and while it might be a choice for adults, it's not really for young kids who get brought up eating that stuff regularly and by the time they are older and wiser they are fighting an addiction.. I know that's not all cases but it's more common than it should be.

Betting ads should always be on at a specific time, and certainly not on stadiums and jerseys.

I just don't see a need for them at all. Plus they are plastered all over the place and impossible to escape.

Likewise KFC sponsoring the video ref.. why even have a sponsor for it as it leads to questions.

I heard he did mention Souths too but I can't be bothered reading a Buzz article. Either way it appears both clubs were convinced and are being paid to by the government, but of course both clubs will act like it was all their idea.

Hey Buzz,

Have you looked at Sharks MAJOR sponsors?

PointsBet - BETTING - 2nd Major front jersey sponsor.
Southern Comfort - ALCOHOL - Rear lower jersey sponsor.
VB - ALCOHOL - Shorts sponsor.
Woolooware Bay (including Sharks Club)
Pilot - Erecticle Dysfunction and Mens Health
PuppiLovers - Online Dating for dog owners.

Really Buzz? and you want to have a go at Bulldogs for not having a sports betting partner, but having a club and hotel group as a part sponsor?

Phil Rothchild on Foxtel this afternoon laying short odds on Barrett to be the first coach sacked this season and understandably after their weak performances in the trials

I don't always agree with Rothchild but as he said the dogs are playing with new players the same way as they played last year and lost 16 games. That gentlemen and ladies is the coach not the new players. I have no doubt the new players are not playing under Barrett the way they played under far better coaches in other teams. If one wants to crucify the new players Barrett keep coaching the way you always have and wait and see, if there is no definite change by round 6, tht you no longer have a team to coach. I watched those trials and to be honest the sharks made us look worse than a bunch of schoolboys playing together for the first time . Shakes my head because my expectations were that we would get off the cellar this season. I've seen nothing despite new players to see any change in that. I hope I am totally wrong but stst speak for themselves. Averillo struggled which means we have no spine in the halves. And once again we have no attack left short and wondering everytime we get on the oppositions 20 metre line.

It's so annoying how the media think it's their right to force coaches out

The only way Trent won't last the season is if the team is as bad or worse than last year.

Last year's team was destined for the spoon and to be fair were the worst team the year before; Broncos had just turned on their coach.

Cant be any worse we did run last

We could do it without winning a game this time lol.

In all seriousness though only a few coaches would have avoided the spoon last year. I think Trent is pretty safe for this season.

Well 4 foxtel experts all agreed that Barrett has to change the way he plays his team or suffer the same consequences as last year being given a hiding each week .Barret has never had a good track record even at Manly where he had a host of top players at his dispoal and yet Manly lost 15 games when he coached them.

I am still haunted by that game the dogs played against the raiders last year when the raiders had one in the sin bin and another sent off 11 men and we were leading by 4 points at the time and still managed to find a way of getting beaten
