Kieran Foran will have to take up to a 75 per cent pay cut if he wants to remain at the Bulldogs next year, with the club tabling the veteran playmaker a one-year extension to stay at Belmore.

Foran has been weighing up the offer since before Dean Pay parted ways with the Bulldogs on Monday night, reluctant to commit to the club without knowing who the coach would be.

Sources close to discussions told the Herald that Bulldogs coach-in-waiting Trent Barrett has indicated he would like Foran at the club next year, but it will have to be for far less than his current deal of $1.2 million a season.

It's believed the one-year deal on offer is worth in between $300,000-$400,000, with Foran willing to bide his time and prove that his value is more than what the Bulldogs are willing to pay at the moment.

Speculation has been rife for months that Foran's old coach, Manly mentor Des Hasler, is keen to lure the Kiwi international back to the Northern Beaches to finish his career where it started in 2009.

Foran has been a strong performer for the Bulldogs when he has been on the field, however the club is concerned about his ability to back up each week given his history of injuries. It's why they've only offered the 30-year-old a deal for one more season.

Foran hasn't played in excess of 20 games in a season since 2014, managing just 32 of a possible 57 games since he arrived at the Bulldogs on a lucrative three-year deal in 2018.

Big test for Foran here.

Cash over loyalty or loyalty over cash. He's spoken before about wanting to repay the club for his injury prone days. Now will be his chance to back up those words.

Quote his 'paying it back' talk and offer him two years minimum wage.

Kieran Foran says he is relieved to have avoided another serious toe injury as he sets his sights on a return, and a one-year extension, with Canterbury.

The Bulldogs playmaker feared another long stint on the sidelines was on the cards after a similar blow midway through 2018.

"I actually thought it was 2018 all over,'' Foran said. "It was that sore and swollen, but the MRI came back and showed I've only sprained the ligaments. I'll be touch and go for Newcastle this weekend. It's still tender and I can't put a lot of weight through it at the moment. We'll see how it settles down and we'll make a call late in the week - I'll give it up until Friday.''

Foran remains unsigned beyond this season but hopes to extend his stay at Belmore. He said he felt he owed the club for splashing big money on him only for his body to keep letting him down.

"I'm not after mammoth dollars. I signed here for big money, and I've been injured a fair chunk of that time,'' Foran said.
"I've only been able to play a certain amount of games, so it hasn't been a good feeling."
"When you experience the tough times with a club, it's always so much more rewarding if you can turn things around and enjoy the really good times."
"From a personal point of view, staying on is what I want to do. Hopefully they're thinking the same and keen to keep me on."
"I've had a busted run with injury, but I'm hoping my body will come full circle and I have a few injury-free seasons at a really high level."
"I don't know where my value sits. You're worth as much as a club is prepared to pay you.''

------------

Have to admire the bloke if he is a man of his word. From memory one or two injuries were not his fault and just bad luck. Can imagine how frustrating it must be to just want to stay healthy and rip in. Problem is he plays to direct in attack (one of his strengths), that he gets belted all the time in defence.

Hopefully he can stay on and get into CHNs ear, tell him to stop being a dickface and get back to work with Dogs. They had a good combo last year.

On minimum wage, I'd entertain him for a year.
Junior playmakers might learn from him as well.

Sterlo says $500k incentive based contract.
Gould say $300k MAX.

"I would be trying to make it so that you could give the opportunity for Kieran Foran to earn $500,000 but part of that is through incentives. So he gets a guarantee but if he plays the majority of the season, that allows him to earn that kind of money. And maybe that's the way that other clubs would have to look at it as well because you're taking on somebody whose body has let him down. If you're going to pay a stack of money per game, you don't want to get caught out because that affects your salary cap. So, whoever is going to get Kieran Foran for next season, I think it has to be incentives-based but it has to give him the capacity to earn a very, very good wage if he's out there for the majority of games."

Sterlo bang on I reckon.

Let's be honest, they are only offering it because he is with us, but we wouldn't be offering that to him if he were at another club.. and I dare say no other club is actually going to up that offer
