After 37 years at the Bulldogs, trainer and conditioner Garry Carden, has been let go.

He was told last Monday that his days as the club’s longest-serving staff member were over.

Almost four decades of history has walked out of Belmore for the final time.

Carden has too much respect to say a bad word about the club that gave him so much.

“It is unfortunately the end of an era,” Carden says. “I’m alright, it was tough last week. You’ve got to cop what you cop sometimes.’’

Rest of the article is blowarsing about the former days of glory.

The big take out of this is how he wasn't replaced long ago given Strength, Training and Conditioning has been a major problem for the club for some time now.

It's Danny Wiedler so grain of salt stuff, but he has quotes for once.

Carden blasts Bulldogs
The Bulldogs’ reputation as rugby league’s ‘‘family club’’ – one they are trying to restore – has taken another hit with the sacking of a man who helped guide and train some of their biggest stars during four decades at Belmore. Garry Carden, who helped shape the careers of Sonny Bill Williams, Johnathan Thurston and Willie Mason, has been told he is no longer wanted by the club after 37 years.

Former premiership winner Mark Hughes, is another who is likely to go.

Carden was a trainer at the Bulldogs for many of those years.

“The club and its players have been my life, I’ve been on JobKeeper because of COVID this year, but the club wouldn’t have known if I was dead or alive until they called to sack me. [Canterbury’s general manager of football] Steve Price called and I hung up on him. I got an email from their HR department. I don’t know why I’ve been sacked. I feel like after nearly four decades, I don’t exist. So much for the Bulldogs being a family club.” Carden, 66, said.

Sonny Bill Williams wanted to speak out when he heard from former teammates about Carden’s plight.
“Without his dedication and expertise, I wouldn’t have been ready for first grade,” Williams said. “He helped shape my career in the important early days.”

Mason was more fired up.
“Garry is part of the Bulldogs’ solution, not part of the problem, you never sack this kind of bloke from a club. You treasure and respect them.’’

Thurston said he was ‘‘shocked’’ at the decision.
‘‘He looked after me, he is Canterbury to his core. He made players tough ... He got me ready for what was ahead in my career.”

The Bulldogs say there was no choice but to let Carden go, given the financial impact of COVID-19 and the appointment of new coach Trent Barrett for next season.

.....

Hmm few things not adding up here.
1. They'd make him redundant, not sack him. Fair Work ensure that these days.
2. Jobkeeper would pay towards his wages $1500.
3. With the team back up and running, why wouldn't be be required?

Almost sounds like something has gone on that nobody is talking about, and the clubs had no other option but to terminate his services immediate.y

Really, did they expect to keep him until he fell off the perch.

Notice the ones that are praising him, played for the Dogs 15/20 odd years ago.

Training habits etc have improved.

Full clean out needed. We've been under performing for 5 years now. Barrett will want to bring in his own staff in order to turn things around rapidly.

It's funny, every time an employee is let go (unlike every other business in the world) you always hear BuT DaY SaY DaR3 DA FaMiLy ClUb.

Employees move on/get let go, it happens. Can anyone name me one multi million dollar business that hasn't moved an employee on?
