NRL star Jack de Belin will face trial later this year on rape charges after his legal challenge failed.

De Belin and his co-accused Callan Sinclair have pleaded not guilty to the aggravated sexual assault of a 19-year-old woman inside a Wollongong apartment, south of Sydney, in December 2018.

The St George Illawarra and former NSW State of Origin lock will face trial from November 2.

De Belin has been been sidelined for the past 18 months under the NRL's 'no fault' stand down rule.

The hardline policy was introduced as a reaction to the game's 2018-19 'summer from hell' which included a slew of players being charged with criminal offences and resulted in a stream of damaging headlines for the game.

De Belin is on a $595,000-a-year deal with the Dragons but is off-contract at the end of 2020.

The 29-year-old has played 154 games for the Dragons since his debut in 2011.

The 12-person jury trial will be held at Wollongong District Court.

I'm curious how this works.. CHN and JO were not convicted of a crime, yet Bulldogs were able to terminate their contracts, and the NRL agreed.

Whilst there was some proof there, neither did anything criminally wrong.

So why didn't Dragons take this same approach and save themselves $600k a year?

Jury has retired for verdict an hour ago.

Jury is made up of 6 men and 6 woman.

Been following that and the Hayne one. Both cases are pretty fucked up.

I often wondered with a jury, like one person is the spokesperson.

Say the entire jury was like "yep not guilty", with the spokesperson begrudgingly agreeing.. could the spokesperson when the verdict is read out then go "we find the defendant guilty" (against the other jurors wishes)?

I don't know what to think about either case. From reading the reports both have a few question marks.

I don't understand why it's ok for their names to be saturated throughout the media when the victims name is kept secret... I'm not saying the victims name should be known, but it's massive damage if those involved are not guilty

It's going to be hard for them to convict JDB and Sinclair just based on the fact that there are a few inconsistencies in her story.. It's hard to play off going into town with them, laughing with them, and taking photos of them afterwards, while claiming that she was trying to get away from them

I have a technical/legal question.

If Jack De Ballsack is found not guilty, is he able to sue the NRL due to restriction of trade? I know he was free to obtain employment elsewhere but A) who's going to hire someone currently going through a rape trial and B) does he even have any other skills/qualifications other than playing football? Even if he's being paid full pay, it will greatly affect his future contract which isn't fair assuming he's actually innocent.

All I'm saying is that despite him being a scum bag for banging another woman while his missus is at home carrying his child, if he hasn't done anything illegal he has missed 3 years of employment and, as I mentioned, will affect his future employment.

Really tricky one. I'll be interested to know if the same jury make up is picked next trial (i.e 6 men and 6 woman).

I can't say either way if he's guilty or not. Stupid: absolutely, scumbag for cheating on his pregnant partner: totally, but outside of that the reports make it sound like a 2 vs 1 "he said/she said".

It's pretty much:
A) The word of a victim + evidence; VS
B) The word of 2 mates.

Not one I'd like to be on the jury for.

The victim should come out and say she was fighting breast cancer at the time of her rap
