Very wishy washy article this one.

Newcastle has emerged as a shock new home for Kieran Foran after the Bulldogs star knocked backed a cut-priced contract offer from Canterbury.

Expected to stay at Belmore for at least another year after making a successful return from injury, Foran could now hit the open market after his manager asked the club to revise their first offer.

The Bulldogs have already been made aware of interest from the Knights and the West Tigers after details of the one-year-deal offer knock-back were leaked.

It is understood the Bulldogs’ initial offer was a one-year-deal worth less than $400,000.

“The first conversations are always a little more challenging, And no doubt we are aware that some clubs will be looking at Kieran after those first conversations. We will continue to talk to Kieran and his agent in the coming weeks.” Bulldogs CEO Andrew Hill said.

The Knights have emerged as the early favourite to snare Foran should the Bulldogs decide not to offer a revised deal.

The Bulldogs have been told that Mitchell Pearce is keen to finish his career by playing alongside his “best mate” Foran in what would be Newcastle’s best halves pairing since Andrew and Matty Johns.

Newcastle recruitment manager Alex McKinnon said the Knights would be interested in a player like Foran but denied any discussion about signing the Bulldogs playmaker.

McKinnon said Newcastle would not have the salary cap cash to bring Pearce’s schoolboy halves partner to the club.

At the moment we don’t have the money for that,” McKinnon said. “Obviously we would love it, but I don’t think we have the room to see someone like Foran in a Knights jersey.

The Knights, however, may be able to free enough cash to sign Foran if he is willing to join Pearce on a contract similar to what has been offered by the Bulldogs.

The addition of a second year might be enough to get a deal done.

The Bulldogs have not yet decided if they will make Foran a revised offer. The club is expected to consult incoming coach Trent Barrett before reconsidering the deal.

“We have some interest, But we are waiting to see what Kieran wants to do.” Hill said.

The Wests Tigers have also been linked to Foran.

With the future of No.7 Luke Brooks in doubt and Benji Marshall expected to retire at the end of the year, the Tigers are expected to make a play for Foran in the coming weeks.

While Foran is certain to attract offers of more than $400,000, the playmaker will not get close to the $1.2m he is on with the Bulldogs this season following an injury riddled three-year stint with the club.

I call media bullshit on this one for a few reasons:
1. Knights claim they don't have the money, and have a few decent halves options already in ther system in Phoenix Crossland, Hayden Loughrey and Nathaneal Sasagi (all three absolute guns with massive futures). Then you have Connor Watson and Mason Lino. Foran makes ZERO sense.

2. Tigers wouldn't bother either. Brooks will be retained, and Mbye could slot into halves as they have fullback options. Then theres young Billy Walters coming through and Jock Maddon who is a superstar in the making.

Buying Foran would make absolutely no sense and most clubs are aware he'll eat your cap from the sidelines.

That said if his manager wants to push his luck, pick up the phone and offer Blake Green the same deal with club option for 2nd season.

Football aside, if Foran has a shred of decency he would sign with the club that has massively over paid him for the past 3 years and accept VERY acceptable 400K to stay.

What happens here will show his true character.

Brooks isn't available. They signed him till end of 2023 in 2018.

According to ZeroTackle, following are off contract end of this year:

FIVE-EIGHTH: Dean Blore, Kieran Foran, Matt Frawley, Blake Green, Adam Keighran, Lachlan Lam, Benji Marshall, Tyrone May, Nathaniel Roache, Tristan Sailor, Jaeman Salmon, Will Smith, Connor Watson

HALFBACK: Jack Cogger, Cade Cust, Rhys Davies, Drew Hutchison, Nicho Hynes, Ryley Jacks, Cooper Johns, Mason Lino, Luke Metcalf, Sean O'Sullivan, Tyrone Roberts, Braydon Trindall

Benji - likely to retire.

Given we need experience, it rules out most of them except Blake Green, whose quite a level head.

Few players that haven't really kicked on (and with limited experience): Frawley, Roache, Salmon, Will Smith, Connor Watson (injury prone), Ryley Jacks, Mason Lino, Tyrone Roberts.

Then there are the younger guys coming through: Sailor, May, Cust, Johns, Trindall.

not sure mate but he is very very average imo.. I would prefer somebody like Mason Lino who single handedly took the Roosters apart in one of early first FG games
Always liked Lino. Tough little nugget
