NRL 2021: Matt Burton’s agent asks Panthers to release young star to the Bulldogs

Bulldog-in-waiting Matt Burton “100 per cent” wants out of Penrith to join Trent Barrett at Canterbury immediately.

And in a stunning development to one of the NRL off-season’s simmering storylines, his agent David Riolo has appealed to the Panthers to “let him go now”. The gifted Dubbo junior has long been recognised as one of the game’s most exciting emerging talents.

But Burton’s NRL career has stalled as he continues to be stuck behind Jarome Luai in Penrith’s five-eighth pecking order. Riolo also revealed Burton was told he’d be playing for a centre spot this year. But now the Panthers have done a swap deal with Wests Tigers to bring in Paul Momirovski in exchange for Daine Laurie’s release on the weekend. It just makes Burton’s hopes of playing NRL this year even more unlikely.

“I am not upset with Penrith, Penrith have been really good and developed the kid. But both parties should move on, it (will be) better for all of them. He will lose a year of first grade if he stays.” Riolo said.

When asked if Burton wanted out, Riolo was clear: “100 per cent.”

But for some reason it appears Burton has become the pawn in a bigger power play between the two clubs. It’s no secret Burton has already committed his future to the Dogs for three seasons from 2022.

Of course, Barrett was Ivan Cleary’s assistant last season on their charge to the grand final, but there seems no love lost now. Behind the scenes the Bulldogs have been hoping for months that Penrith would release Burton at some point. Riolo says it’s time for everyone to make it happen.

“In my opinion it is better if Matt Burton goes to the Bulldogs now. It is better for Matt Burton. It is better for Bulldogs. And it is better for Penrith because they remove a surplus player who doesn’t really want to be there. He wants to be somewhere else.” he said.

Riolo explained the soon to be 21-year-old had been treading water all summer: “He trains with the top squad but he is not in the top team. He is surplus to their top team so let him go now.”

While it has been assumed all summer that a deal will be ultimately cut between the clubs before the new season kicks off, it just continues to drag on.

Riolo conceded talks continue to bubble along but only Penrith can make it happen.

of course Penrith supporters are still whinging about compensation, because you know, they are the only team who develop players

Fresh twist in Burton saga as Bulldogs refuse Panthers’ swap proposal

The tug of war over the services of Panthers young gun Matt Burton has taken another twist with Penrith holding firm on refusing to release the Dubbo product a year early.

Fox Sports has also learned the Panthers discussed a possible swap deal with Bulldogs front-rower Dylan Napa but Canterbury-Bankstown torpedoed the prospect.

The Panthers have turned over a number of players under contract this summer with Josh Mansour, Dean Whare, Jack Hetherington, Zane Tetevano and Daine Laurie all let go – despite being under contract - by last year’s grand finalists.

Last year’s captain James Tamou was also off-contract and opted to take up a two-year deal with the Wests Tigers, meaning the Panthers have released three front-rowers and are yet to replace them.

Young gun front-rower Spencer Leniu and the experienced Moses Leota will shoulder the majority of the load but the Panthers still need depth in terms of middle forwards.

This is where Napa’s name was mentioned in a possible swap scenario with Burton. Napa is on around $650,000 a season, making it difficult for the Panthers salary-cap wise.

The Bulldogs point blank refused the swap deal – leaving the Burton situation unresolved.

Under the Napa proposal, the ex-Queensland Origin forward would have joined Penrith this year but there was no guarantee to be a deal for him beyond this season.

Panthers deputy chairman Greg Alexander reiterated the club’s position about refusing to release Burton unless the Panthers can strengthen their roster.

“Unless the Bulldogs can provide something of value to us then we’re not just going to hand Matt Burton over. Matt and his manager have been aware of this from the moment Matt signed the contract with the Bulldogs.” Alexander said.

The Bulldogs have signed Burton on a three-year deal from 2022 onwards but want to fast-track his arrival to start the season in the halves alongside fellow new recruit Kyle Flanagan. But the Panthers are continuing to hold firm unless they can benefit from a swap deal. Burton, 20, has played five NRL matches for Penrith over the last two seasons.

I'm really hoping Dylan thrives under Barrett.. whilst he hasn't been terrible, he hasn't provided a whole lot.. it's never going to be easy when you're an impact player trying to be a meter eater in a team where the other main man is Tolman

He was killing it early on, then copped an injury (syndesmosis iirc), and then last year was his knee causing problems.

Fully fit with boppers like Ogden and Hetherington alongside him, he could return to form.

Yeah definitely.. it's always going to be hard to thrive in a team that are not really going forward, unless you are Taumalolo.. Napa is the player who will compliment what his teammates are doing, but he's unlikely to be like the main meter eater, or anything like that

Can we start a gofundme for the panthers since they're soo destitute, that they feel they're just in seeking compensation for a player they don't want and don't have a spot in their first grade team?
Fucking inbred bogans.
