Official Meaney signs on with Storm

Melbourne Storm has added to its 2022 NRL squad by signing Nick Meaney from the Canterbury Bulldogs.

The 23-year-old, who has played a total of 55 NRL matches for the Bulldogs and Newcastle Knights, has agreed to a two-year contract, and will join Storm at the start of the 2022 pre-season.

At home at fullback, on the wing or in the centres, Meaney has scored 18 NRL tries and has proven to be a handy goalkicker.

Storm General Manager – Football Frank Ponissi said the high quality of Meaney’s play and his versatility were key factors behind the club’s interest in signing the young Bulldog.

“We see a lot of upside in Nick,” Ponissi said.

His ability to play a number of positions in the backline is definitely a plus and we’ve had outstanding feedback on his work ethic and character.

Meaney was a junior with the Ballina Seagulls on the NSW Far North Coast before signing on with the Newcastle Knights where he won the club’s NYC Player of the Year Award in 2016.

He represented New South Wales under-20s in 2017 and later that year was named the Knights’ Intrust Super Premiership Player of the Year.

Meaney’s NRL debut came as Newcastle’s starting fullback in round 18 of the 2018 season against Parramatta.

He played his 50th game for Canterbury last weekend.

Tends to suggest Okunbor will be retained, and perhaps Schoupp performing has helped seal Meaneys decision as well.

speed or not, he gets manhandled at the Dogs.. at least he can play on the front foot at Melbourne.. Jayden is probably more suited to a team trying to rebuild because he's a bigger body and can get over the top of defenders
