The NRL thought they were close to striking a multimillion-dollar deal with a major hardware giant, but the company is believed to have backed off amid fears that their brand could be tarnished by NRL players.

It is understood the NRL is still hopeful that they can rescue the deal, but weeks like this haven’t helped.

“The players are costing the game millions,” one influential figure told The Weekend Australian.

Well there aren't many major hardware giants anymore. Home Hardware about a decade ago were looking to sponsor the NRL, Mitre 10 and even Stratco I wouldn't call "giant", and that leaves Bunnings.

Would have been a huge coup, but in many ways, the NRL only have themselves to blame for this. Should have come down heavier on them at first.

is Home Timber & Hardware the same as Home Hardware? my money is also on Bunnings being the "Giant"

the NRL needs to start looking at what they can do about alcohol related incidents because you'd have to say that at least 80% of the player related incidents are alcohol related.. violence especially considering the fact that these guys are considered 'role models'

Yep... Second or third largest hardware chain after Bunnings. Not sure how big Mitre 10 is compared to them (these days).

Bunnings would be a huge coup, and given that they are interlinked with tradies, and lots of tradies are into sports/NRL, it's a smart move.

Mitre 10 are still pretty big I think they would still be considered a giant ..just..

Yeah for sure.. and they also target families so it's no surprise they would walk away because of Payne's antics
