Canterbury has dumped star fullback Matt Dufty for Friday night’s big match against premiers Penrith.
Dufty was selected at fullback on Tuesday night but has been told he won’t play unless there is a late injury.
He will now be pushed back to either 18th or 19th man.
The Bulldogs coaching staff are yet to name a replacement although News Corp has been told Corey Allan will play fullback for the BlueBet Stadium game.
Canterbury management was hoping to keep their decision on Dufty in-house until an hour before kick-off.
Multiple sources have however confirmed the former Dragons fullback would be demoted.
The demise of Dufty — off contact after this season — comes just days after a bold performance against St George Illawarra where he logged three try assists but committed two errors. He polled one Dally M point.
Allan has just returned from injury and seems the logical replacement although winger Josh Addo-Carr could be moved to fullback.
A former Souths player, Allan scored a try in Canterbury’s 40-22 loss to St George Illawarra in the NSW Cup last Sunday at Belmore.
Allan was originally named on the reserve list for the Panthers match in jumper number 22.
There was a suggestion Dufty could leave mid-season for England but that speculation was firmly denied on Wednesday afternoon.
The Bulldogs hope Dufty can fight back from this setback and play a role in the NRL side over the back-end of this season.
Late Mail: Star enforcer Luke Thompson has been ruled out due to “delayed symptoms of concussion,” with veteran prop Ava Seumanufagai replacing him in the starting side and Joe Stimson joining the bench. The Daily Telegraph reported Matt Dufty is set to be dropped with Jake Averillo the surprise choice to shift to fullback. Corey Allanis likely to come in on the wing with Jacob Kiraz moving to centre. Allan was retained when the squad was trimmed 24 hours out from kick-off. Raymond Faitala-Mariner gets his first start since returning from a long-term foot injury, with Corey Waddell shifting to the bench.
What does Topine have to do to get gametime seriously!?!?!
Delayed concussion.. from Sunday?? Hmmm unless it happened at training, I call bullshit.
In other good news though:
The Bulldogs are hopeful of having Tevita Pangai jnr available in Round 14 after the forward was ruled for the past two matches with an aggravated disc in his lower back.
Centre Braidon Burns (hamstring) and forward Matt Doorey (ACL) are closing in on returns and should be available in Round 16 and 18 respectively.
Possibly.. maybe they feel more comfortable with Potter as a senior/leader type figure where as there's always the suggestion of Bazz being more of a "mate".. it sounds like Mick is more straightforward with them and is comfortable with giving them home truths.
Baz would have been on very low confidence so it would be of no surprise if some of the players had lost confidence in him.
I wonder if Gus and co are monitoring Potter before pulling the trigger on a new coach, though most believe Gus would have had a plan in place before they moved Trent on.
I thought Alan was going to play half but yeah I'm keen to see him play... Alan cops a lot of shit but if we play more attacking footy he might go alright
the scary thing about this game is that Panthers side still looks stronger than our last two opponents.. JFH, Edwards, Api, Kikau, May, Tago, Leota, etc... far out they've got it good right now out there.
