Sydney and Collingwood — two of the best teams of the 2022 season — will battle it out for a spot in next week’s Grand Final against Geelong when they clash in a preliminary final blockbuster at the SCG.

The Swans finished third on the AFL ladder but earned the week off after upsetting Melbourne at the MCG in a qualifying final. Should they beat Collingwood, it’d the be their sixth Grand Final since 2005.

The Magpies bounced back from their tight qualifying final loss with a comfortable semi-final win over Fremantle last weekend. A Collingwood win on Saturday would see the club qualify for its first Grand Final appearance since 2011.

The match sold out quickly during the week, with ample Melbourne-based Pies fans driving up to New South Wales for the match.

Some chose to fly on gameday — and had a nervous few hours.

At least eight mid-morning and early-afternoon Sydney-bound flights from Melbourne airport were delayed by at least half an hour – two by at least two hours – ensuring a last-minute scramble and panic for fans.

Collingwood president Jeff Browne was reportedly caught up in the delays. He was on a Qantas plane that was turned around mid-flight after fumes were detected. The plane was then held on the tarmac as a firefighting crew assessed the situation.

There were no late changes, with Sydney’s Braeden Campbell and Collingwood’s Nathan Kreuger named the medical subs.

Fox Footy pundits discussed pre-game how it could be Franklin’s final AFL match amid uncertainty around his future beyond this season, while predicting the legendary forward was in for a big outing after being held goalless by Steven May a fortnight ago.

“Potentially it could be the last time we see him play a game of AFL — which is something we don’t really want to think about, but he’s got a point to prove today to himself,” Fox Footy’s Sarah Jones said.

“He doesn’t like getting beaten, he doesn’t play two bad games in a row.”

Hawthorn great Jason Dundstall added: “I hope (it’s) not (the last time we see Franklin.

“What he does do is average 2.5 goals in his preliminary finals, mind you, he’s played six of them.

“I’ve got a feeling he’s ready to really assert himself ... we might just get a little Buddy magic on the home deck today.”

Wow what an insane finish.

If that game goes mere seconds longer Collingwood win.

Sydney were up by 20+ every quarter with a good lead heading into the fourth.. Collingwood slowly chewed back the deficit, got within 6 during injury time but could only manage behinds from there on, finally got within a point but the buzzer sounded. Seems like the week off didn't benefit Sydney but they held on.
