Michael Schumacher is set to undergo cutting edge stem cell surgery by a world-renowned doctor in an attempt to regenerate his nervous system, according to reports.

Formula 1’s most decorated ever driver suffered a life-threatening skiing accident six-and-a-half years ago and was in a six-month coma.

He has been bedridden ever since although his physical condition has been kept closely guarded, with very little information being released from the family.

But, according to Italian media reports, he will undergo the operation in the coming days and it will be performed by French cardiologist Dr Philippe Menasche, who is believed to have operated on Schumacher before, in last September.

He is a pioneer in the technique of grafting stem cells onto a damaged heart and it has been proven to be a safe procedure.

The 51-year-old is having damaged cells replaced with healthy ones which have been harvested from bone marrow or blood.

He is reportedly also suffering from muscle atrophy and osteoporosis having been confined to bed for so long.

Jean-Michel Décugis, a journalist at French newspaper Le Parisien, reported that Schumacher had been admitted to hospital in the French capital last year.

The Times reported Décugis as saying: “Our sources say that Michael Schumacher is receiving stem cell perfusions that ... produce a systemic anti-inflammatory effect.

“That is to say they reach the whole body and you could imagine that they reach Michael Schumacher’s brain.

“It’s quite mysterious. Officially [Professor Menasché] works only on the heart.

“He is carrying out experiments with [secretome] that is made by a laboratory from new stem cells and injected into veins, until now only on animals.”

This is the latest procedure in a series of ‘part-experimental’ operations.

......

If this report is indeed true, I'm on the fence on it. Michael was an absolute legend, but this just feels like "Lets Experiment!!" and using him as a guinea pig.

His condition is a close guarded secret, but it's sad that this legend will (realistically) never be the same Michael again.
