This is aimed at PC nerds like @spiritofaslan and/or @Hacky McAxe.

So I've been busting the missus's balls about getting a new graphics card and I think I've finally cracked her because apparently we live on the street and eat dirt for dinner...

Anyhow, as stated I want to upgrade my graphics card and I don't know if anyone will buy a used GTX 1060 6GB card. So, can I have 2 GPUs running at the same time? Current one and I'm looking at an RTX 2070 to maximise graphics/performance or is it a complete waste?

If not, do you guys know where used graphics card can be sold at a reasonable price? Or am I going to have to put it on ebay/gumtree?

Thanks. And please, go easy on me if that was a stupid question haha.

You can only run two of the same card at the same time. For example, 2 x 1060. There is a kind of workaround to do it but it makes it run like crap so not worth it.

As far as selling it goes, yep. Ebay or gumtree. There used to be great PC buy/swap/sell markets but they pretty much died after ebay became a thing.

In regard to the upgrade, if you're going the 2070 make sure it's the 2070 super and not the standard 2070. The standard 2070 is a piece of crap.

Three things to keep in mind:

1) Nvidia are discontinuing the 2070 series immediately so they may not be available for much longer

2) the 3080 and 3080 Ti comes out mid September, so if you can wait 1 month the prices of the 2070 Super (if still available) and 2080 Super will drop a fair amount

3) Graphics cards have increased in price since the Rona started but if you keep an eye on Ozbargain, you'll usually find a good deal. For price comparison, the cheapest the 2070 Super has been for the last few months is $750. Before Rona started it went on sale for $650. Those are best sale prices though, generally it'll go for around $850 - $1,000

Awesome. Thanks for the advice.

Shame it can't really be done but all good. Will probably just sell it via gumtree.

It was the 2070 super I was looking at. Think it was about the 850 mark.

Didn't realise the 3080s were coming out so soon. Why did I think they were coming out around Christmas time?

Also, what's the difference between the 2070 super Aorus and the Windforce besides the $300 difference?

They haven't released the actual release date yet but several reliable sources have leaked it as 17th September.

The Aorus is more of an enthusiast or specialised version. The pros

- runs slightly faster due to a better overclock and better cooling

- looks better

- has 2 more HDMI ports and 1 usb c port

Personally I don't think it's worth the extra cost

The leaks thus far have suggested Big Navi will be 40% to 50% more powerful than an Nvidia GeForce 2080 Ti, the most powerful consumer graphics card currently available.

Damn.

Often that's done to dent sales of the other guy. Then the card comes out and it 's a flaming heap of shit that underperforms.

Twin GPUs have kinda died off these days (used to be all the rage), as now one card has sufficient enough punch, and most games aren't really written to utilise dual cards.

Hacky's covered most of it, as you used to be able to do trick stuff like use a lower quality card and shift some processing onto it.

The 6GB card is still in demand. Crypto miners love them. The 3GB version was the neutered one.

Aorus has a 4 year warranty from Gigabyte. Larger fans and thus probably quieter operation. Cooling setups are slighly different.

The 1650 Super I’m running is good enough for now but left it open for an upgrade in a few years time.

Hacky was saying the 3080 should be out next month. Get a couple of those and an i9.

Oh, you said you have 8gb of RAM? to me minimum is 16gb but if you're going for a 3080 might as well go for 64gb RAM.

x2. Get it custom built by a small business though. If you go to a retailer they’ll rip you off a few hundred at least.

@Fartin luther king when you're ready to go and when new cards come out, that's the best time to look.

At the moment trying to get a bundle from a PC shop is tricky because most haven't updated their bundles with the latest CPUs.

If you budget roughly around $5000 (without monitors) you'll get something pretty decent.

I still personally build, albeit not as much these days.

@spiritofaslan how do I run Windows 10 as Administrator? I want to delete files from windows.old and it won't let me unless I'm administrator. I installed windows 10 and didn't specify any admin account when I first got this laptop. 🤷‍♂️

I'd just leave it there if you upgraded from Windows 7 to Windows 10. By default your user account should be admin.
