I'm not as knowledgeable as Hacky and Aslan but I'd say so. How old is my 1060? That card can run any game with no issues ( arring X-Plane)
I'm trying to jusytify if I were to dump 5 or so g on a pc if it lasted 10 years it would only be 10 or so dollars a week

Very justifiable. And if the missus breaks your balls, do what I do and tell her you'll punch her in the moot.

So last night our conversation went like this.

(missus says something stupid, don't know wasn't listening)

Me: do it and I'll punch you in the moot.
Her: go, do it.
Me: go to the room and take your jeans off.
Her: so you want me to go to the room and take my jeans off and you're going to punch my vagina?
Me: I didn't say with my hand.
Her: you're disgusting. Our daughter can hear you.
Me: a 1 year old doesn't know what a moot is.

So to the people with pc knowledge if you built a beast around the 3080 do you think with evolving technology in 10 years I would still look decent?

I don't think you'd look decent in 10 weeks

Jokes aside. Probably not. A top of the line card is top of the line for about 6 months - 1 year, great for 2 - 3 years, decent enough for 4 - 6 years, pretty redundant after that.

That said, Moore's Law doesn't work any more so performance increases are less good. The GTX 1080 for example has been out for 4 years now and it's as powerful as the current top AMD GPU. And about 20% as powerful as the top nvidia GPU, but still a great card.

The other thing to keep in mind is that there's new consoles coming out. That means that graphics will likely be slowed down for the next few years to keep in line with console specs which will pretty much be a 3070/3080.

4 years old.

As a side note, the 970 is now 6 years old and it struggles. The 980 is better but slightly younger and it still struggles with modern games.

The GTX 10 series gave us a nice jump and the 20 series jumped again on top of that. The 30 sounds like another decent jump so I would expect it to flatline after that for the next 4 years or so. But I still think it'll be a struggle.

Keep in mind that we're at a point where graphics card companies are pushing technology to its limits. They're searching desperately for the next Tech advancement but as it is currently, the 2080 Ti still struggles to get 60 fps at 4k with some games. And they're now pushing toward 8k which the 2080 Ti probably couldn't run.

I'm just gonna put it out there... but imagine if they added aerial fire fighting AND helicopters to MS Flight Sim 2020!

Been that way for a while. They introduced their Play Anywhere system a few years back which meant that any Microsoft made game (Forza, Gears of War, etc) that you buy through the Microsoft store can be played on PC or Xbox.

Then they updated this with Xbox Game Pass. It's pretty good. I played through Gears of War 4 and 5 on both PC and Xbox. If I got to a part that was too difficult to do with the Xbox controller then I'd jump on PC and finish that section then go back to Xbox.
Oh wow I didn't realise it worked that closely. I thought it was just like "yeah for games that are compatible you can just install the PC and XBOX versions and play them".

So to the people with pc knowledge if you built a beast around the 3080 do you think with evolving technology in 10 years I would still look decent?
Pretty much echoing Hacky's comments. In the past technological/visual jumps were significant.
2 colour CGA 16 Bit VGA
16 Bit VGA > 256 VGA
VGA > Super VGA and like 65336 colours.

Looking at some of the current and next generation games, we are pretty close to achieving "uncanny valley" in recent games. The Last of Us 2 for example.

As such progress will slow as instead of taking jumps like 20/30/50/80% in new releases, we'll only really be taking 1-10% if that.

As we get closer to reality with visuals, that percentage gets smaller.

Personally I don't see 8K gaming as a reality, it's pointless. Heck even 4K is pushing it. I'd say 4K with higher fps will be the limit for some time. Maybe VR will expand as well.

A brand new RTX 3080 Ti should hold its own for some time though, and AMD don't even have an answer for it. Problem is that means the price will be high as there is no competition.

If you look at the whole CPU/GPU landscape these days, it's shifting more away from raw speed into how to compute that same amount of power in better ways. Bigger caches, faster lane buses, faster storage.

....

@Hacky McAxe might recall, but I think the latest Nvidia trick was Ray Tracing or something. They are also pushing DLSS now with AI in the RTX cores apparently

5 years maybe, 10 years unlikely, but nobody really knows.

  1. Agreed on the 8k. There's only a small noticible difference between 1440p and 4k, and the difference between 4k and 8k is barely noticible when your face is close to the screen. 8k is a gimmick used to sell TVs, but they're still pushing it.

I listened to a few talks from developers where they discussed the upcoming console power changes and stuff and they basically all said the same thing. The new wave of technology is not really about increasing graphics quality. It's about making it easier to avoid compromises. Things like where you play games and you have to climb through a crawl space which is used to hide loading screens. Or downgrading certain elements to balance it. More advanced hardware just makes it easier to avoid having to use these tricks.

Side note, no idea why it went crazy when I tried to quote your post. It's like it refused to let me post separately and added all these dot points.

BTW, if you want to see how advanced graphics have become in this current generation, as Aslan mentioned, Last of Us Part 2 has some of the most amazing limit pushing Tech which encroaches on Uncanny Valley.

This covers it really well. The amount of detail in that game is ridiculous. It's just a pity the game was so heavily criticised by incels.

But how more realistic can things get in 10 years? The last fight night is over 10 years old and the graphics are brilliant to this day
I would be happy with today's best technology for 10 years me thinks.my old LCD tv recently died we got 10 good years out of that

Probably not that much I'd say. I mean its pretty close already.

I'm still on GTX970 and cant recall the lsat game I tried, though I am keen to give F1 2019 a crack and see what it presents like.

Ahh so more about creating a free flowing experience where nothing has to buffer, etc. Or lessening the load on one specific hardware item?

I think they also want to push more towards dynamic/ever changing environments. I.E a rock slide where no 2 rocks fall the same twice.

I struggle to see much difference about 1080p these days. That said if I had a 4K monitor I probably would :)

It carried over the Ordered List according to the BBcode. Just toggled it on and off and it resolved it.

I have a tech question:

I'm interested in upgrading my 28.8 kilobaud internet connection to a 1.5 megabit fiber optic T1 line. Will you be able to provide an IP router that's compatible with my token ring ethernet LAN configuration?

Speaking of next Gen shit, Microsoft and Sony have refused to give a release date for their consoles. Apparently Telstra just spammed their customers saying that the Xbox Series X pre-orders will go live soon through Telstra's Xbox monthly plan thing.

People are saying that that LOW is probably more like "HIGH" in normal games.

Damn that's an impressive looking sextoy flightstick.

MS Flight Sim running on min spec.

Not sure how that compares to Nvidia equivalent but seems okay-ish. Buildings have bugger all definition though.
